Achievements

The organization has had a number of successes over the period it has been in operation the notable ones being as follows;

1. Emo Community Development Society

Some of the key success stories of the Society include;

a) Amani Rift Valley Peace Program

The society played various pivotal roles in uniting members of the different communities living in the Rift Valley after the devastating Post-Election Violence (PEV) of 2008. Working with local and international development partners, the society was able to hold meetings to calm down tensions that had built up as a result of the PEV. Some of the meetings included bringing together members of the affected communities in various forums like; Religious leaders, Professionals, Business Community, Members of Parliament, Civic leaders, mixed couples etc.

The society was also able to do civic education on the implications of the Waki Commission Report which was creating tension among the ordinary members of the communities. This culminated in a workshop in Eldoret where over 625 civic leaders drawn from across the region attended and the outcome completely cooled down the tensions. (See a copy of the synopsis attached)

b) Rite of Passage (circumcision) for Boys (Tumdo program)

The society initiated a circumcision program for boys where it is integrating culture with Christianity and Education. For many years, there has been conflicting programs run by the community one based purely on culture while the other purely based on Christianity.

The integrated program which was substantively started by the society in December 2008 has gained acceptance by both the cultural and the Christian proponents. This has led the society to develop a written curriculum to be rolled out across the region. Topics covered include cultural practices, Christianity, entrepreneurship, leadership, conflict resolution among others.

The society targets to rollout this program to be done in Nairobi, Eldoret, Kericho, Nakuru and any other region which might want to embrace the same.

c) Girls Mentorship Program (rite of passage free from FGM)

Owing to the success of the program for boys, the society started one for the girls beginning December 2013.

This program is designed so as to have two levels; one to train high school going girls and the other to train University/college going girls

Training for the high school girls majors on cultural practices and career development while for University it zeros in on Cultural practices and how to take care of a home
